INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS
PURPOSE
The purpose of the music scholarships is to enhance the musical development of students of symphony orchestra instruments who have demonstrated high musical achievement and wish to study advanced orchestral playing skills.
ADMINISTRATION
The administration of the music scholarships will be the responsibility of the chairman and members of the Scholarship Committee and overseen by the DOS Board of Directors.
ELIGIBILITY
Any person who receives compensation as a member of the Dearborn Symphony is not eligible. Applicants must be continuing participants in their school instrumental music program or a recognized community symphony orchestra.
The scholarships are to be used for private instruction on the same instrument as played at the audition and may be awarded to any Dearborn/Dearborn Heights public, private or home-schooled student who meets the following criteria.
SCHOLARSHIP I: Dearborn and Dearborn Heights residents
or students
a. Plays a standard symphony orchestra instrument (string, brass, wind
or percussion, excluding keyboard)
b. Will be enrolled in grades 8 - 12 for the scholarship year and is a
continuing member of the school instrumental music program or a recognized
community orchestra.
c. Received a first division rating in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra
Association District Solo & Ensemble Festival or is highly recommend
in writing by their school or private instrumental
music instructor.
SCHOLARSHIP II: Children of non-resident volunteer Dearborn
Symphony musicians.
a. Applicants must fulfill eligibility requirements as stated for Scholarship
I.
b. The volunteer orchestra member must be totally uncompensated (complimentary
tickets excluded), a performing member of the Symphony for a minimum of
three full consecutive seasons and in good attendance standing.
AUDITIONS
The Music Scholarship audition is administered by the scholarship chairman
and will be held in the presence of judges.
Eligible candidates should be prepared to play a solo composition. Scales
and arpeggios in various articulations and sight reading may also be required.
Audition scheduling will be arranged by the Scholarship Chairman or administrator.

NOTIFICATION AND PUBLICITY
The scholarship term is one year, beginning June 1 and ending May 31.
All matters pertaining to notification, activation, publicity and arrangements
for payment of monies are handled in accordance with approved procedures
of the Scholarship Committee.
Scholarship recipients will be notified by July 1 and may submit receipts
retroactive to June 1 for a one-year period. All reimbursement requests
must be received by the Scholarship Committee prior to May 30.
